Winter Fuel Payment

Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help anyone on state pension or certain other benefits with heating costs. It’s worth £200 a year if you’re under 80 and £300 a year if you’re over 80, but you’ll usually get less if you live with other people who also qualify.

Cold Weather Payment

Cold Weather Paymer is a weekly payment of £25 to help with extra heating costs when the temperature is particularly low for a prolonged period of time. below freezing for 7 days in a row (between 1 November and 31 March).

You’ll automatically get Cold Weather Payment if you get:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit.

Affordable Warmth Obligation

You can get help with paying some or all of the cost of insulation work or replacing your boiler if you’re on certain benefits. To be eligible, you must be receiving:

  • Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (and your income is £16,010 or less)
  • Working Tax Credit (and your income is £16,010 or less)
  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance,
    Universal Credit (in some cases).

Warm Home Discount

This is a one off reduction on electricity bill of £140 between October 2016 and April 2017. You qualify if:

  • your electricity supplier is part of the scheme
  • your name (or your partner’s) is on the bill
  • you are getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

If you don’t qualify you may be able to apply directly to your electricity supplier for help if you don’t get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit but:

  • you’re on a low income
  • you get certain means-tested benefits

If you qualify, you’ll receive a letter. This will tell you how to apply for the discount.. Alternatively, you might get a letter telling you that you don’t have to apply and you’ll get the discount automatically.
